Pecan Crackin'

Emily's father-in-law gifted us with a bucket full of pecans last week. Can you even imagine how excited I was? Fresh pecans.....yum! But then that means I would have to crack them.
No problem, it will totally be worth it.

Years ago, Cliff's daddy had 3 or 4 pecan trees and he got bookoodles of pecans from them every year. He then had the arduous task of cracking the pecans. Now, I'm not sure where he got the idea...he may have seen one like it somewhere....but, out of necessity Mr. Clifford got busy and made himself a pecan cracker. It's a vice-like apparatus with a lever that results in a perfect cracked pecan. They almost come out of the shell whole.

Mr. Clifford passed away a few years ago and his pecan cracker has become a family treasure.
Cliff's mama let me borrow it, today.

My Sunday afternoon project.....pecan crackin'.

Oh Happy Day!

  1. You are so lucky! And yes, it is totally worth it! They are out of this world expensive up here and the trees don't like it so far north!

    1. I know! HaHa! They are very expensive down here, too. That's one of the reasons I was so excited. I want to plant a couple of pecan trees this spring. If I start getting bumper crops, I'll share.

  2. Oh- How I love pecans! I am the only one in my family that likes them (they are all NUTS)--just not pecan nuts, I guess. That is a great little device. I have never seen one like it. Somebody ought to patent that thing! xo Diana

    1. LOL! Oh my goodness....they don't know what they're missing. I think you can buy that little device online. I don't think he invented it, just made himself one. It sure works like a charm.

  3. I grew up in Illinois where we had some nut trees (unlike up here in northern Minnesota!) and I have fond memories of "helping" my grandpa crack and shell nuts. Can't get them any fresher than that . . . or the wonderful pecans you will have to use. Nuts are nutritious and contain all kinds of good things for us. They're such an easy healthy snack food, too.

    1. Yep, nuts are giant on the food chain and so delicious. What kid of nuts did you have in Illinois?

  4. What a treat! The crackin' makes it all the more precious...a reward after the hard work! We have some black walnut trees here but I hate black walnuts and when they are in the shell I hate them even more. They leave a black mess when the squirrels get them on the deck. However, the wood of the tree is worth money and we had a man who has harvested some trees here before take interest in our black walnuts....I'll take the cash to get rid of the messy things!

    1. You should have something made out of the wood for yourself. What a great treasure that would be.

  5. My Mammaw in Mississippi had a pecan tree in her front yard. She always had plastic bags of pecan halves in her freezer drawer (she had the old fridge where the freezer was in the bottom half, not the top like they are now). I just loved going there to visit and opening that drawer to have a snack of frozen, fresh pecans. Boy were they good. Nothing like what you get in the bags at the grocery store nowadays.
