Lidia and I were talking the other night when I said to her that Dial soap smells like summer to me. And then she said, "suntan lotion smells like summer to me". That gave me the idea to put together a list of my favorite summer smells. In no particular order........
Dial soap...the gold bar
Coppertone Suntan Lotion
Watermelon
Fresh strawberries
Peaches
Food cooking on the grill
Freshly mown grass, which incidentally smells a little like watermelon
The lemony scent of Magnolia blooms
Lemons
Lemons
Gardenias
First morning air, when the dew is still wet on the grass
The earth, just before a summer rain
Pluff mud at the beach
and
and
Salty air
What's your favorite Summer smell?
Laurie

You have about covered all of mine. I especially like the smell of wet pine trees after a summer shower, the smell of clean sheets that have been dried in the sun , andI use to love the smell of talcum powder you used after a shower to cool off., but it has gotten a bad rap lately.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question: The lake is too cold, even in summer without a wet suit.
Clean sheets....that's a good one.
DeleteI guessed the lake would be too cold. My husband is doing a triathlon in Silverthorn and you have to swim in a wetsuit.
It was fun to read your list! Love the smell of my yellow iris (like cake) and my purple iris (like grape soda) but those are late spring smells around here. I also love the smell of the fields here on the farm after a summer rain.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, Marcie, I don't think I've ever smelled irises. How wonderful to know what they smell like.
DeleteI've never thought grass smelled like watermelon! Your grass must be fruitier than ours! haha.
ReplyDeleteLet's see...summer...
coconut sunscreen, for sure
fresh herbs
food on the grill
corn on the cob
the air after a rain
tomatoes, warm from the sun
any kind of fruit pie baking
mosquito spray
HaHa! Not all grass smells like watermelon, but I have definitely smelled some that does. Fruity grass....LOL!!!
DeleteOh, tomatoes and mosquito spray.....good ones!
For over 25 years I could not smell at all. I am smelling one again and my favorite scent right now is the lavender blooming in our garden. The bees seem to like it also.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, lavender is a nice one! I'm happy you're able to smell again, Carol.
DeleteNot too many people have lawns here to mow, but when it happens and I get a whiff of that, I am instantly drawn back to summer days of my childhood. Just as when I smell wood burning, I think of Fall ... I close my eyes and pretend I'm somewhere else. :) That smell, just before the rain, is also a favorite. Also something we don't get here. 93 degrees at 8:37 am :(
ReplyDeleteI sense you're missing some pretty terrific smells. It's amazing how a scent can evoke such memories. Yikes it's hot there. It's 68 degrees here at 6:45 am.
DeleteWhat a fun idea for a list to summarise summer! Lots of my favourites on there! Freshly mown grass is always going to be near the top of mine and believe it or not cow's breath! Weird I know!
ReplyDeleteOn our farm the cows spent the day grazing and we would visit them in the evenings.
Well, I guess I'm not that surprised at cow's breath being on your list. They do eat grass....we can call that freshly mown. HaHa! Love your list, Christine!
DeleteI love the smell of cookouts, fresh cut (watermellon) grass and the smell of fresh cut vegetables mainly cucumbers!
ReplyDeleteLisa
Oh yeah, Lisa! Cucumbers....Love that, too!
DeleteLove this!! Ok, freshly mowed grass, for sure. The pavement after a rain. The smell of meat cooking on the grill. Sheets fresh off the line. The smell of the ocean when on vacation. Oh...and a campfire!
ReplyDeleteI love all your favorite smells! The pavement after a rain is a good one!
DeleteGreat post, Laurie! I pretty much love all the things you listed. I enjoy, the fresh smell after a summer rain, ocean spray, all kinds of citrus, cucumbers, fresh tomatoes and, yes, peaches!
ReplyDeleteLove yours too, Lynn, citrus especially. I didn't mention grapefruit, but love that one too.
DeleteI guess I don't think about smells very much. I know I don't like strong smells. I wondered why the dial soap smell just in the summer time? Nancy
ReplyDeleteHey Nancy, years ago we spent some time with friends of ours who had a house right on the beach. They had a claw foot tub that I loved bathing in and they used Dial soap. The smell of Dial just takes me back to those times we spent with our friends during summers. It invokes good memories.
DeleteFavorite smell of summer? Yeah, bug repellent. Not really, but I'm in a grumpy mood this morning because I was planning on spending the whole day out in the garden getting tons done . . . even was out there before 7 a.m. . . . but the dad-dratted black flies are out there, too, and I'm back inside until something in the weather changes so they go away. Grump-grump-grumble.
ReplyDeleteOh man! I hate that for you. I don't know what black flies are, but we get yellow flies. They will bite the mess out of you. Hope you can get out there soon.
DeleteWhen I see Dial soap I have to think of my poor hubby who's very allergic to it! But I think the smell of suntan lotion and chlorine remind me of Summer at the public pool when I was growing up. I remember one day when my kids came home from school right before it was time for Summer break and I had all the windows open. When he walked in he immediately stopped and said: "Man, I love that smell"! Now I always think of that on a lovely day like we're having today and all the windows are open and it's breezy and pleasant out. Smells bring back many memories!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that your son noticed the smells of your home with the window open. And, I agree with the chlorine smell, too. Lidia and Sawyer came home from the pool yesterday smelling like it.
