A Southern Summer Delight

That moment when the tomato juice and Dukes mayo mix and turn pink...Oh my, my!
Heaven on sliced bread!

A summer classic and southern delight.....the tomato sandwich is hands down one of the best things about a southern summer.

This time of year, tomatoes are in abundance all over southern gardens. The growing season starts earlier and lasts longer and with such an abundance, meals with them are, too. Earlier this spring, when I put tomato plants in the ground, my mouth began to water. I remembered last summer and years before....the sweetness, the juiciness of the tomato sandwich. It's the one thing that, when eaten, says summer is here!
Can I get an Amen?

I had a tomato sandwich yesterday and another one, today.

A southern staple.

Now, it dawned on me that there could be someone who has never fathomed the idea of a tomato sandwich, much less sank their teeth into one. Well, honey child, if that's you, I'm here today to enlighten you on this southern delicacy.  It's ingredients are simple. You won't even need to copy the recipe down.
Here it is...

Tomato Sandwich
1 garden fresh, sun-ripened tomato, sliced
2 slices white bread
Dukes mayonnaise (brands matter)
Salt & Pepper, to taste

Spread Dukes mayo on your bread. Lay on sliced tomatoes and salt & pepper to taste.

That's it! Heaven on sliced bread!
Go ahead and make yourself one. Let me know how you liked it.

Talk soon,
Laurie

  1. Yes, I'll give you that amen! Although I admit vine-ripened tomatoes are hard to come by up here near the tundra (!), I well remember my childhood in Illinois when I ate a lot of tomato sandwiches just as you've described. Good? Oh, better than that!!

    1. Oooh, she testified! HaHa! Sure wish I could send you a vine-ripened one. It would probably be tomato sauce before it got to you though.

  2. Amen! So yummy and sweet! Although we don't have duke's mayo here, a tomato sandwich is a summer treat!
It does take another month here before our homegrown ones are fully ripened.
    Enjoy your summer!

    1. Room temperature for sure and lightly toasted is good, too. Yeah girl, I had to make sure my northern friends knew how we make it because if you don't use Dukes....well then, it's just plain tomatoes on bread.

    1. Betsy, you have to try a tomato sandwich. You just have to. Oh man, when the juice from the tomato mixes with the mayo....you just want to drink it! HaHa!!! There's really only two ways that I don't care for tomatoes....pizza sauce and tomato pie. Yuck! But otherwise, I could eat my weight in them.

  6. Laurie, you post the yummiest pictures! And you are correct -- Duke's is the ONLY mayonnaise.

  7. I've never heard of Duke's mayo but next month when all my tomatoes are finally ripe I'll have a sandwich...plus I'll have to get white bread which I never buy. It will be an adventure! We love to make a meal with just fresh tomato and fresh sweet corn...yummo! When I was a kid my Grandma used to make onion sandwiches with mayo and white bread. She thought that was pretty darn good too..of course she was a Yankee..like me! Enjoy your weekend and stay cool!

    1. You'll have to order some Dukes mayo and have it ready for your first tomato sandwich, YaYa! Fresh corn and tomatoes!!! Yum!! And believe it or not, I have eaten onion sandwiches, too...made with Vidalia onions. To most, it probably sounds gross, but it sure is delicious.

  8. Since. I am a southern girl...I have eaten tomato sandwiches, although like many of the others, I haven't heard of Dukes. Looked it up and it said the product had a cult like following. That is impressive. I will have to order some!

  9. Even us Northern Gals love tomato sandwiches, Laurie! I can remember having these from the time I was a child - my Mother loved them! I like mine with a little lettuce and lots of pepper. I have not heard of Dukes, but must try this! x Karen

    1. Are they just the best, Karen? My daughter that lives in Colorado can't get Dukes that far west. They don't sell it in the stores out there...that she's found. I ship her a jar every once in a while. But you can order it online. I'm sure places like Amazon have it. Hope you try it.

    2. I stand corrected. Apparently, Wal-Mart carries Dukes in Colorado, but it's not sold in Oregon or Washington.

    1. You should. It may become a new favorite. It doesn't taste the same without Dukes. Hope you can get some in California. Let me know what you think.

  12. Growing up...my Mom would buy Beefsteak tomatoe. One thick slice, was all you needed! So big, it was the same size as the bread! Hahaha! We have Hellmans and Miracle Whip up here....loved those sandwiches! Thanks for making me remember, Laurie!
Came home from the cottage this afternoon....too darn hot! And windy! Nice and cool in the a/c here at home....
Have a great time with your daughter!
    Cheers!

    1. Oh yeah, beefsteaks are wonderful. And I love that it just takes one slice to cover the bread.

We had a storm come through this afternoon...blew a tree down. We're scrambling to find someone to remove it before we leave for Colorado.

Thank you, Linda. I certainly am going to enjoy my daughter....really been missing her, lately.

      Enjoy the AC!!!
