Trent Harmon, The Last American Idol

Whew, Lord. I don't know how I'm going to survive. I mean, for the last 10 years, American Idol has been my show. I scheduled everything around it. I wouldn't take phone calls or even have conversations with my family, when Idol was on. And now, they just up and called it quits.

I will grieve and suffer. There's just no sugar coating the gamut of emotions I will go through. Will I come out of this unscathed? I doubt it, but we'll see. Ha!

I didn't start watching American Idol until the last couple of weeks of Season 4. I didn't even know the show existed until then. I had been knee deep in x-ray school and had no time for television. But when I did start watching it, I was all over it. I knew everything about every contestant. I could predict who was going home and even the final two. I rooted for Taylor Hicks in Season 5. I still remember his audition song and the way he looked, when he sang it. I was shocked, when I heard him start singing Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come". Honestly, I thought he was a little touched at first from the way he threw his head to the side, after finishing his songs. In the end, I was his biggest fan. I knew he would win. I got angry the year that David Archuletta didn't win and I threatened not to watch the show any more. But, I couldn't resist. I was back at it again the next year. I've laughed and I've cried during the shows, none more than this final season, though. Kelly Clarkson had me in tears with her latest song, "Piece By Piece", and Keith Urban did too, as I watched him cry. I could tell you countless stories.

In this post, I sadly say goodbye to one of the best shows I've ever watched on television. I never missed an episode. Never. One of our friends brought his television to a horse ride one year, just so I could watch the show....heck, I even watched it on my iPhone one evening, sitting in the boat while Cliff fished. It was better than American Bandstand. American Idol has produced some amazing singers over the years. Thursday night's finale was the best. I knew Trent and La'Porsha would be in the finale. The show ended it's 15-year run with two of the best singers gracing it's stage, in my opinion. I am glad Trent won, he was my favorite......even more than Taylor Hicks. I can't wait to see what he does with his music career.

As Ryan Seacrest said his last goodbye, I couldn't help but wonder if he was trying to tell us something. He said, "Goodbye for now."  Did anyone else catch that?

Here's hoping,
Laurie

P.S. You may think this post is silly, but that's ok. I'm really posting it for posterity's sake. I want my children and grandchildren to know what floated my boat....as if they had no clue. HaHa!

  1. I loved it when I watched it, too, but then some of the changes and dynamics in the judges didn't quite work, plus we got rid of cable so wasn't able to get it anymore. I was a fan of Taylor Hicks, too. Would have liked to see the final season. I'm sure I'll catch some reruns at some point.

  4. Not silly at all! It's life and the few pleasures we can have that aren't on the depressing news front or the political arena! I used to watch it when it first came on but haven't seen it in a long time. I'm am amazed that many of the artists that don't win become big stars and some moved on to acting. Glad you enjoyed it and I feel your pain at it's end..kind of like Downton Abbey for me! Don't make me teary eyed!

  5. Laurie, I watch Idol some times...not all the time. But the year that David Archuletta was on...I truly think he should have won. I loved that kid. We watch the Voice now. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

  6. I never got hooked - thank goodness...I have enough vices! And, I read your whole post, picturing you doing the "Ugly Cry". I have a feeling you watch "nice" shows, so I won't even mention that you should pick up all the past seasons of Walking Dead, and get caught up before they show who just got whacked (seriously shacked) when the new season starts up! Happy Saturday!

    2. Those crazy fingers! Lol!

I didn't do the ugly cry, but I did shed a few tears. You want to know what Cliff said? Absolutely nothing. He didn't care for Idol, but knew how much I did....he knew not to say a ding ding thing about my show. HaHa!!

And no girl, I can't watch Walking Dead. They give me the creeps.

  7. Good for you, for being such a loyal fan...
We watched for years...then I got confused about the judging!
We always watch the auditions...did this year too...
Perhaps it will be back...in a different format!
    Do you watch Survivor?
    Cheers!
    Linda :o)

    1. I watched the auditions, but they weren't my favorite part of the show.

No, I don't watch Survivor. I used to when it first came on and then they were going to ask the contestants to drink blood....I stopped watching after that. It made my skin crawl.

  8. I have watched American Idol, Laurie, though not more than a few times a season. For some reason, I didn't get into it. I think you must feel like I did when Downton Abbey came to an end. I will miss it terribly and I hope the rumor that a movie is in the future is true. I hope you will have a great Sunday and that your week will be blessed!

    1. There are a lot of Downton Abbey fans out there that feel the same way and yes, that's probably how I felt at the end of American Idol. I never watched Downton Abbey. I kind of wish I had now.

  9. Change is hard. especially when a show you loved comes to an end. I cried when Mash ended :)
I watched a lot of idol....I also like dancing with the stars.
Who knows maybe, just maybe they will bring it back.

  10. American Idol was a good show. I only watched one full season, the one with Adam Lambert, and I thought it was really unfair he didn't win so I never watched again... Maybe I should have. There was a portuguese version at some point, but my country is too small and there were not many good singers.
Maybe Ryan Seacrest is coming back with some other similar show?

    1. That's what I was wondering, too. Ryan did a great job hosting Idol. No doubt, he will go far.
