My Little Garden

I love a garden. And every year, about this time, I get garden fever. I want to get outside and plant things and watch them grow. I get so excited, when I see those tiny little green leaves start to appear. But, for the past few years, we've been on the go so much that a garden was not practical. Well, except last year when I planted cucumbers, tomatoes and cilantro. I harvested all of 4 cucumbers and 2 tomatoes and the cilantro died a horrible death just as they were popping out of the dirt. The cherry tomatoes did very well, however. They always do. I just don't know what happened, unless I planted too late. I really think that was it.

Now that we are at the lake, I started dreaming again. Remember when I was sick, I posted about planning my garden. Here is the rough sketch of it.

Well y'all, Cliff made my dreams come true. Last Friday, he solicited help to build me a garden with raised beds and the cutest white picket fence. I've dreamed of white picket fences, since I was a little girl. I love them. And now, I have one around my cute little garden. I am so excited!

My garden is bare bones, right now. I have raised bed planters and a compost bin and that's it. But oh, you just wait! I have plans. Cliff is going to build me a potting shed, soon. I am going to put in stone pavers, hopefully, around the perimeter. I'll have a bench to sit and rest, if I need to. I am going to plant some flowers in a planter in the corner, which will also house a birdhouse on a post. I'll have more flowers in pots dotted about. There will be artwork on the wall by the fireplace. I'm getting goosebumps just talking about it.

This is it.....

Right there, where Cliff and the guys are standing, is where the potting shed will go. It will be small, but I don't need much room for tools and a few shelves. Oh, and I have the perfect little table and wicker chair in storage that will go inside.

What a view! I'll enjoy this as much as the garden.

Lidia and Sawyer helped me plant the garden. And now, Lidia wants one of her own. I sent her home with seeds and Cliff is having a raised bed made for her. She'll have her garden by this weekend.

Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how happy this little garden makes me. The beds are planted and I'm on my way to completing my dream of it. I'll show you photos along the way. I can't wait to see little green plants popping up out of the raised beds and decorating the inside. And....because Mama Pea of A Home Grown Journal asked, I planted:
cucumbers
cilantro
sweet bell peppers
okra
beets
squash
cantaloupe
and, this weekend I'll plant tomatoes, lettuce and potatoes

And, in case you were wondering......Cliff said, "It looks like a cemetery."

HaHa! Not for long, honey!

  1. LOL! Cliff's comments just floored me! What a beautiful garden, and you don't even need a plow. I remember, years ago, when we had a huge backyard garden. I didn't think vegetables and new potatoes could taste so good.

    1. Haha! Jim...he is the funniest thing. Usually there's an element of truth to what he says. I guess, if I didn't know better, I would question it, too. Water on the ducks back is all I'm gonna say about that. Lol!! I totally agree with you, there is nothing better than fresh vegetables straight out of your backyard garden!

  3. LOL! Once again, I think Cliff and my husband would get along great. ;) Your garden is off to a gorgeous start. I keep hoping the rain will stop long enough for me to get outside. Soon, I hope! (However, we had a very dry year last year, so I am thankful for the spring and winter rains we've had this year.)

    1. Thank you. Hope you can get out there soon, Renee, to get yours planted. We had a very wet fall....not sure how that will affect us, if at all.

  4. Omigosh, your little garden is just as cute as could be. You are going to have so much fun with it this year. And you're planting quite a lot in it and a good variety, to boot!

I wish Cliff hadn't made that comment about it looking like a cemetery . . . hee-hee, now I can't get it out of my mind! Although you'd probably never find a cemetery looking as good as your white picket fenced garden does!

    1. Thank you, Mama Pea! I am going to have fun. I can't wait to pretty it up even more. My boxes aren't all that big, so I wasn't able to plant a lot of anything, but a good variety, yes. Cliff is crazy. HaHa! It won't look like that long. I'll post pictures along the way. And thanks for your help with the tomatoes!

Can't believe you can plant a garden mid March....our rule up here is mid May with fingers crossed and by Memorial Day to be safe from frost! haha. You'll be eating produce by that time!

    1. Thank you, Betsy! I think it looks so much like a cottage garden or it will, when I'm done. It's so fun, when your dreams and plans come to fruition. Yes, March is a little early for us, too. We usually shoot for Good Friday to mid-April. Good Friday is just next week and it has been so warm that I think we're safe. Fingers crossed! Lol!

    1. Thanks, Laura! Yes, the lake is beautiful. We are enjoying it so much. And my garden is making me so happy. I can't wait to see how it produces. This is the first year of veggie gardening at the lake. The upstate SC is so different than what we're used to along the coast. So, gardening there will be interesting.

  8. Wow, so darn cute! You'll grow tons of veggies and fun in those beds. You don't need 50 acres to have a great output of food. I have raised beds too but not surrounded by a cute white fence. I love yours! I often joke that mine looks like a cemetery too. In fact, Halloween has me putting fake headstones on the empty plots when we have parties! I'm I giving you any ideas? I'll look forward to the finished product and all the pretty plants in a few months. I'm getting garden fever too!

    1. Thanks, YaYa! In our case, the fence is needed to hopefully keep the deer out. We have an abundance of them. But, it is so stinking cute, if I say so myself. No headstones in my garden. HaHa! Nope, not me....by that's right up Cliff's alley, though. Lol!

  13. WOW!! I'm totally impressed, Laurie! By all means keep us posted on this garden...which is already off to a fabulous beginning! I'm like you as well, and getting very itchy to get at it!! These warm temps have sure brought in the Spring Fever!

    1. Thanks, Don. But oh man, I'm concerned now that I should have waited to plant. These warm temps have been a teaser. I just read that it may dip into the 30's next week in upstate SC. I'm already thinking about what I can do, if the temps do drop. I have drop cloths I can cover them with, just in case. I hope they work, if it comes to that.

    1. Thank you, Janey.....aside from the beautiful view, I owe my pretty garden spot to my husband. He built it, now it's my turn to decorate it. Lol!

Well, I am exactly 5ft 4in, too. How about that!
