Cliff said......

Here's a pretty bloom to start your weekend because Lord knows we need something lovely to meditate on, especially after yesterday's encounter.

Now if you know anything about me, then you know I am deathly afraid of snakes. Well, I had an encounter, yesterday.

Do you remember this picture? I was pulling up weeds and grass by hand, laying down newspaper and then topping it off with wood chips. I finished that stage of the garden project and now I'm putting down a flagstone path around the outside perimeter of the garden to make mowing around it easier. I'll show you that, when I'm finished.

Yesterday, I was pushing the newspaper back on the outside edge and....OMG! There lay a snake. I just about freaked out. My hand was close enough that I may have touched it. I have never been so close to a snake before, except the time I stepped on one, when I was a child. Which is probably the reason I'm so afraid of them. Anyway, I backed up so fast that I nearly stumbled. For a split second I thought about running in the house and staying there. But, I braved up, grabbed the shovel and chopped the mess out of him. First time ever! He was all of 8 inches long. Long enough, okay!

Later, I asked Cliff if he told his mama that I had killed a snake and Cliff said, "She couldn't believe it - she almost choked on a vanilla wafer, when I told her."

HaHa! She knows me well.

We won't talk about the King snake I saw in the flower bed by the back door, this evening.  Now that one sent me running and squealing back into the house.

Happy Weekend,
Laurie

    1. You lucky girl! No snakes....now that is pure awesomeness! God bless St. Patrick! Welcome to my blog. I look forward to getting to know you and your blog. Some of my ancestors are from Ireland. I don't know where, but I'm sure I'll find out at some point in my ancestral searches. Glad to see you here. I'm heading over to your blog now.

    1. I agree, Monique. I don't know of any other fear that affects me that way, except for someone harming my children or grandchildren.

  4. Oh gosh, I feel the same way about snakes! (I'm even queasy around worms!) Even so, I could not have taken a shovel to one the way you did. That almost creeps me out more than anything. You can tell I'm not nearly as brave as you are. I would have had to stay in the house until someone came to my rescue. :o/

    1. I've been deathly afraid of them my whole life. I can not believe I braved up like that. But, that honking big King snake sent me running.

    1. Lol! That was the first time ever! I am so afraid of them that I can't function, when I see one. I don't know how I did it. After seeing that King snake, I almost had chest pains.

  6. Gotta' love Cliff...and his mama! I have a friend in TX that has been dealing with Copperheads in their backyard - their dog got bit last year (scary few weeks, but he survived), and has cornered two more already this year. Keep a big, sharp shovel handy, girl!

    1. Cliff's mama is as funny as he is. You would love them. That little baby snake was the first and probably last that I'll get close enough to, to kill. I'll have to call for back up, if I see a copper head. There was one under our wood pile a couple of months ago. The boys moving the pile farther away from the house found and killed it. Thank heavens for them.

    1. Me too, Nancy! Snakes will make me hurt myself, trying to get away. I thought the Gerbera daisy was pretty too. Their colors can be so vibrant.

  9. I would freak out. Although, I have held snakes multiple times, not dangerous ones, and they absolutely amaze me with their strength and the feel of their skin.

  10. What a wonderful garden you have there. Look forward to see its progress. I can just picture you beating the crap out of that sucker. I am not a snake person at all, and here in the woods, they are everywhere. Up on the ridge, you will find timber rattlers, copperheads are quite common, the very large, and quite ugly rat snake...ewww, as well as the milk snake, member of the King family. Once I opened my garage to see a coiled up milk snake. My very cool black lab took care of that. I HATE THEM ALL!!! And now I probably won't sleep tonight. Aloha.

    1. Oh gosh, I hate them too. I've never heard of the milk snake. I'm going to google it. And then I probably won't sleep tonight, either. Lol. My garden has been so fun. I can't wait until I can start harvesting. I think the first thing that will be ready is the cilantro.

    1. Normally I would, but he was heading deeper into the garden and I knew it would take days for me to go back out there, if I lost sight of him. So I had to do it. I was scared, but I did it!

  15. I don't know what's in your area but some snakes are beneficial. That being said, I don't want to meet one head on no matter how good, bad, or indifferent they may be! I probably would have left ASAP and had Jack deal with it! You're brave girl!
