They've Taken Over

Brown-headed Cowbird

I never knew of them before this spring and my gosh, they have moved in and taken over. The poor Cardinals, Sparrows and Finches can only watch. If they didn't lay their eggs in other bird's nests, I might not be so aggravated with them. They are eating me out of house and home.    Just look.......

Moving in......

 Hanging out....

 Taking over......

Poor Cardinal, he's a'wishin and a'hopin they'll save him some.

Well, that's the state of affairs around the lake. It's been rainy all day and we are expecting to have a rainy Easter.

Talk soon,
Laurie

  2. Hi Laurie, I am not a cowbird fan..nor starlings...hate that nasty squawking things. They do ruin things for the prettier birds. I miss my finches. The bluebirds didn't stay because the wrens kept getting in the houses. I still have doves, cardinals and robins. Hope you can keep the pretty birds. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

    1. Hi Susie, I haven't seen many bluebirds this spring. I remember seeing them in early summer last year. I hope they find the houses I put out for them. So far, I haven't seen many robins, either. But boy, those cowbirds are plentiful. After posting the pictures on here, I counted a dozen at the bird feeder. Yikes! What am I going to do?

  3. I sure hope the cowbirds are just moving through your area. Maybe they will disappear as quickly as they came. We saw our first robin of the season last Thursday. Seems early for us.

Our weather for tomorrow is poor, too. We had light snow all day but it melted as soon as it hit the ground. Tomorrow is to be more of the same. Looks like our Easter bonnets will have to be waterproof!

    1. Waterproof for sure, Mama Pea. Got the umbrella ready for church. I sure hope the cowbirds are just passing through, too. I'm wondering if I don't refill the bird feeder, will they think the cafe is closed? Hmmm. We'll see.

  4. Goodness! You do have a lot of them! Greedy things! We only get one or two, which is enough.

    1. I know! After I posted these pictures, I counted a dozen gathered around it. They wiped the feeder clean. I hope they move on.

  6. Great pictures. The doves around here pretty much gobble everything up pretty quickly. They even eat the cat food I put out downstairs for the street cats. But thankfully they do share with the sparrows when I put out birdseed. Have a blessed day.

    1. Thanks, Tammy. Thank goodness the doves share. They seem like such a meek bird, don't they?

Our Colorado girl comes in this week. Can't wait to see her.

      Happy Easter.

    1. Thanks, Monique. Yes, the bullies have to be dealt with. I didn't re-fill the feeder and I haven't seen one of the bullies, since. Hopefully, they've moved on. Hope you had a great Easter, as well.

  10. Hey Laurie...
    Yikes...that is too many...for sure!
I think not feeding for a few days...also...they are big birds, and may not be able to gobble it all up you have a smaller feeder....seems they prefer the open or platform feeder....
    Good luck!
    Happy Easter!
    Cheers
    Linda :o)

    1. Thanks, Linda. Right now, all I have is the one feeder. I need to get a smaller one and see if that solves the problem. Although, I haven't put out any feed for a couple of days and I think they may be gone. Hope so. They were gluttonous! We had a nice Easter...hope you did, too.

  11. I've never seen those around our place and I hope I don't! We had a beautiful Easter Sunday but we're actually celebrating with our kids tomorrow. Of course the weather is horrible this weekend. We just had a snow storm hit and the temps are in the 20's! Brrrr! Oh well, that's usually how my weather pattern hits...anytime I plan for outdoor activities, it goes bad!

  14. What great photos of such nasty birds. We have cowbirds here in Vegas...nasty, nasty birds! I have several varieties of birds here that I have to chase away during nesting season - I have a pair of doves that returns each year. Along with the blackbirds and cowbirds that attack the nest! NASTY, NASTY birds. Hope you and Cliff are enjoying these first days of spring. XOXO

    1. I stopped putting food out for a few days and thought the cow birds had moved on. No such luck...I put out some food for the other birds yesterday and guess who was first to show up? Cliff and I are having a great spring. Our Colorado daughter was home for a long weekend. I hated to see her go back yesterday. Man, I cried like a baby.
