It's true! The beach literally smells like horse poop. But, it's for a good cause. This is the weekend that the local chapter of the American Heart Association hosts a horse ride-a-thon at Lakewood. There will be approximately 1400 horses on the beach, over the weekend. Cliff and I used to bring our horses and ride with these cool folks, but for the last couple of years Cliff had bike riding events and this year, our move has just thrown us out of whack and it just didn't happen.
Anyway, today, I'm sort of thankful for horse poop and thankful for organizations such as the American Heart Association who support research and educational projects for heart disease. This ride was started over 30 years ago and has grown into a huge fundraising event. I just went to the AHA's website and saw that as of today, the horse riders have raised over $280,000. How cool is that?
I went out this morning and took a few pictures. It is truly amazing to see all the horses on the beach and each one of the riders have raised money for the American Heart Association. Take a look..........
Tomorrow is the big riding day and there will be so many more horses than pictured here.
It's a sight to behold.
Have a great weekend, y'all!
Laurie
HOW COOL! (Got a real chuckle out of your post title!)
ReplyDeleteHaHa! It is cool, just doesn't smell like it.
DeleteWhat an amazing sight. You just don't see that many horses on the beaches. It's great that it's for a good cause. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteHi Susie.....here in Myrtle Beach, you can ride your horses on the beach from November 1st until the end of February. The AHA ride-a-thon is the only time you will see that many horses on the beach, at one time. However, during the winter, there will be a handful or two. You are right, it is an amazing site. Glad you stopped by, please come back soon. ~Laurie
DeleteBeautiful shots Laurie.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janey! Have a good weekend!
DeleteDoes someone come and pooper-scoop when it's all done?
ReplyDeleteOh, they do that all day, every day while the horses are here. They use backhoes....LOL! I'll try to get a picture tomorrow.
DeleteHi Laurie, I thought I would take a break and try to catch up with friends. I want to wish you well on your new chapter with a new home. You do get attached to your homes that you have lived at for so many years. Horses are the love of my son's family. They are taking three to the abused children fund raiser tomorrow. They will let them be petted and lead around . There is only one that fits. The other two is just to pet. Have a wonderful day. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend Shirley
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shirley. Yes, I was super attached to my home. It was hard to leave. That's awesome that your son uses his horses for those special children. Hope you're doing well and hope you're having a great fall season there in Missouri. Don't be a stranger! Lol!
DeleteWhat a great event! I don't think we have anything like this at our beaches - I'm not even sure horses are allowed at all of our beaches. I've never seen them there. I saw them in Oregon though, and I loved that sight!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carola....it's not something you see everyday, that's for sure. But when you do, it's so neat.
DeleteThis is sooooo cool. Id love to see this. Horse poop? Lol
